Tom's lessons are a masterclass in how to do production properly. With 19 years' experience as a professional producer, he has worked in iconic studios such as Yellow Arch Studios and Red Tape Studios. Currently senior producer at Make Noise Studios, he loves to share the knowledge and techniques that he knows work!

As a child, Tom was trained as a classical musician, studying violin, piano and church organ, and singing in the Northern Cathedral Singers choir. His father was a music teacher from a long line of talented musicians. For Christmas when Tom was 11 years old, he received a Roland D-20 synthesizer with a built-in 8-track MIDI sequencer, which got him hooked on the tech!! Rebelling in his teenage years he got into alt rock and taught himself electric guitar and bass guitar.

 

In his twenties, Tom took several freelance production jobs, working in Jump Studios, Yellow Arch Studios, Red Tape Studios and more with artists such as the England Brass Band. He also took up live sound, working regularly at the Leadmill and Corporation Nightclubs, touring venues such as Cardiff Arena and Hammersmith Apollo, and working with bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Tears for Fears. Live sound taught Tom to be slick but fastidious with audio setups.

 

A nerd and tinkerer at heart, his home studio got thoroughly out of hand, until, age 26, he set up Ebb-Tone Studios with his band mates, mainly so he had somewhere to stick all his gear! The studio was successful and remained open for 13 years, but eventually, the gear out-grew that space too!

 

Over many years, Tom has used Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Cubase professionally, as well as every piece of audio gear you can imagine. And some that you can't. And some that didn't exist until he invented them.

 

Tom has recorded countless albums, EPs and singles in every style for many years, with artists such as Vex, Coco and Jube. Tom is excited to have held for two years the role as senior producer on the Make Noise Studios management committee, alongside his old band mates from the Ebb-Tone years, Jono and Rich.

 

And in case you wondered, that Roland D-20 still has pride of place in the studio!
